The digital restoration of the film took place in 2014 in collaboration with professionals from the UPP, the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, the National Film Archive and the Association of Czech Cinematographers, but especially with support of the authors themselves, director Jiří Menzel and cinematographer Jaromir Sofr. The whole digital restoration was coordinated and financed by the Czech Film Foundation. The gala premiere took place on the on the 5th of July at 2pm in the Great Hall of the Thermal Hotel at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary.

About the film
Menzel's Closely Watched Trains, based on the eponymous novel by Bohumil Hrabal, is considered among the most famous titles of the golden fund of Czechoslovak cinema. Immediately after its premiere in 1966, the film was a great success. It was subsequently awarded a number of prestigious awards and today still influences audiences around the world.
About the premiere
The gala premiere of the digitally restored version of Closely Watched Trains took place on the 5th of July at 2pm in the Grand Ballroom at the Thermal occasion of the 49th International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary. Before the premiere, Jiri Bartoška, the president of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, gave the opening speech. He was followed by Ctibor Pouba from the Czech Film Foundation, Jiří Menzel, Jaromír Šofr, Vaclav Neckar, Nada Urbánková, Květa Fialová and Jitka Zelenohorská. All of the actors and artists expressed their delight about the digital restoration of Closely Watched Trains and supported the actions of the Czech Film Foundation.
The digital restoration
The actual digital restoration of Closely Watched Trains began in February 2014 when NFA gave the source materials to the Czech Film Foundation, and ended in June 2014, when it finally met the nine-member committee overseeing the process and the accuracy of the digital restorations. The total cost of the digital restoration summed up to 1,310,000 - CZK, which was funded thanks to the financial support of the Czech Film Foundation.
